A position is available to work on visual models and metrics for evaluating and optimizing the quality of AR/VR graphics. The project aims to develop a family of image/video difference metrics that predict the perceived degradation of image quality while considering physical (AR/VR) display characteristics. This particular role focuses on the training, evaluation and development of metrics that could be used to accelerate research on rendering and display methods used in AR/VR headsets. 

Candidates should have a degree in computer science, electronic engineering or a closely related discipline, with experience and interest in image and video quality. The candidate must have sound foundations in machine learning and image processing. It is also essential that the candidate has sufficient experience with deep learning frameworks, such as PyTorch.

This is an exciting new opportunity for a highly motivated computational researcher to join Professor Sir Shankar Balasubramanian’s pioneering research programme to play a key role in advancing the understanding of sequence, structure and chemical modifications in DNA and RNA. Using their expert knowledge of programming languages, statistical/machine learning methods, bioinformatics tools and resources, the ideal candidate will use and develop computational approaches to transform raw sequencing data into biologically meaningful information.

Arnell Post-Doctoral Research Associate (Fixed Term)

The Arnell Post-Doctoral Research Associate will work on a project funded by the Centre for Climate Repair at the University of Cambridge, based at the Department of Geography, and will work under the guidance of Dr Francesco Muschitiello.

Stratospheric injection of aerosols by explosive volcanic eruptions results in a complex set of responses driving climate effects on a variety of time and spatial scales. However, the mechanisms by which volcanic forcing causes global and regional cooling on long timescales remain insufficiently examined.

This project aims at investigating the potential of clusters of strong volcanic eruptions to cause sustained cold events under pre-Holocene climate scenarios. The successful applicant will design and run transient climate model experiments using Earth system models that include atmospheric chemistry-aerosol-climate coupling, i.e., one or two of the following models: UKESM1, MPI-ESM1.2, and HadCM3. The simulations will be performed under a range of glacial boundary conditions to determine the cooling potential of volcanic clusters and assess short- and long-term memory of regional and global climatic variability. Particular attention will be paid to how volcanic cluster signals propagate into the subsurface ocean and the associated determinant processes, the ocean memory effects and the coupling between northward heat transport, Arctic Sea ice and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. Finally, the experiments will be evaluated using a wide network of proxy-climate data by comparing reconstructed and simulated spatial temperature and precipitation patterns.

Eligible candidates must have a PhD (or equivalent degree) in Climate Physics, Applied Mathematics, Earth Sciences or allied disciplines. A background in palaeoclimate modelling is desirable. They must be highly motivated, have excellent time management, organisational and communication skills, and be able to work well as part of a team

Research Assistant / Research Associate (2 Positions, Fixed Term)

Two positions exist for Research Associate in the group of Dr Slager, embedded in the Theory of Condensed Matter group at the Department of Physics, University of Cambridge. The aim of the role is to explore new topological phases of matter, broadly defined. In particular, we will be keen on further exploring multi-gap topologies. Additionally, we will be interested in topological physics and relations to superconductivity, out-of-equilibrium, defects, quantum geometry as well as response physics and beyond. 

The candidate will be funded from an ERC-UKRI grant that aims to further develop these new phases of matter. Please see our recent works on the website or contact the PI for more details. Although the candidate will be concerned with the theoretical aspects of this pursuit, this position is part of an ambitious research program, with a strong interdisciplinary nature, including but not limited to collaborations with the Monserrat group in the Materials Science and Metallurgy Department as well as other international theoretical and experimental partners. 

The successful candidates will hold (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in theoretical physics and be judged according to: (i) having a strong scientific track record as demonstrated via publications in major journals and by c.v., (ii) scientific maturity, (iii) scientific independence, (iv) ability to work in a group, (v) analytical skills including knowledge of field theory, modelling, geometry and mathematical approaches and (vi) numerical skills. The candidates will also have the ability to further develop own research ideas as well as profit from all training programmes in place to further progress their career.

Research Assistant/Associate (Fixed Term)

We invite applications for a Research Assistant/Associate position in the group of Dr Bartomeu Monserrat at the University of Cambridge. We are looking for a motivated, independent, and talented scientist to join our group. This is an open call in the general area of first principles materials modelling. The successful candidate will work in one or several of the current areas of interest in the group, which include: * Topological materials * Superconductivity * Strongly correlated materials * Exciton-phonon coupling * Machine learning. 

Applicants must have (or be about to receive) a PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related subject. The ideal candidate will have experience in code development and/or use of first principles methods (e.g., DFT, GW, BSE, DMFT). Applicants must also have a strong track record of publications in computational materials science, excellent communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively in a team of scientists with different backgrounds, and a willingness to take a leading role in the supervision of junior group members.

Research Assistant/Associate (Fixed Term)

Applications are invited for a researcher position in the laboratory of Dr Paul Miller at the Department of Pharmacology, University of Cambridge. I am looking for a motivated and diligent scientist to study small molecule and/or antibody modulators of ion channels as research tools and therapeutic leads, in order to study channel subtype contributions to CNS physiology and disease and empower drug discovery. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in handling challenging membrane proteins, understanding small molecule and/or antibody modulation, and cryo-EM, ideal for follow-on academic and biotechnology careers. The lab utilises mammalian cell protein expression systems, membrane protein purification, and cryo-EM via Arctica and Krios microscopes with K2/K3 direct detectors, and also has manual and automated electrophysiology equipment.

Research Assistant/Associate – Natural Language Processing (Fixed Term)

We are looking for one Research Assistant/Associate to work on the project Automated Verification of Textual Claims (AVeriTeC), an ERC project led by Prof. Andreas Vlachos at the University of Cambridge starting in January 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will be based in the Natural Language and Information Processing group at the Department of Computer Science and Technology. 

The project will focus on developing approaches enabling the verification of highly complex claims, which require multiple pieces of evidence. Particular focus will be paid to accompanying the verdicts with suitable justifications.

Candidates will have completed a Ph.D. (or be close to completing it) in a relevant field such as NLP, Information Retrieval, Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning and be able to demonstrate a strong track record of independent research and high-quality publications.

Research Assistant/Associate in Galaxy Formation (Fixed Term)

The Institute of Astronomy (IoA) expects to appoint a postdoctoral researcher to work in Professor Debora Sijacki’s group. The research will encompass a wide range of issues relating to black hole and galaxy formation at high redshifts, their cosmic evolution to the present day and the impact of supermassive black holes on galaxy mergers and galaxy clusters. The research will involve extensive hydrodynamical simulations as well as linkage to observational data. Substantial experience in N-body/hydrodynamical modelling is essential for this position. 

The successful applicant will be expected to pursue independent and collaborative research, develop a high degree of interaction with the faculty, postdoctoral researchers and research students, and actively contribute to the life of the department. They will disseminate their research findings via publications or other appropriate media, such as international workshops and conferences. They will be encouraged to participate in the teaching and learning programmes of the department as well as in the supervision of postgraduate research students and outreach events.

Applicants must have a PhD in Astronomy or a related field, or have satisfied the requirements for the PhD, by the time of appointment. Applicants must possess a scientific publication record and a clear outline of current and future research areas of interest. Applicants must have excellent communication and computing skills and are expected to produce scientific articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Research Assistant/Associate in Galaxy Formation, Dynamics and Evolution

A postdoctoral position is available at the Institute of Astronomy, funded by a Leverhulme Grant to Professors Vasily Belokurov and Wyn Evans to study “The Faint Universe made visible with Machine Learning”. 

Candidates should hold a PhD (or be near to completion) in astronomy, physics, maths or a related field and have research expertise in one or more of the following fields: galactic astronomy and dynamics, numerical simulations of galaxy formation, machine learning and computational statistics, astronomical spectroscopy, wide-field surveys, or any allied areas of theoretical/observational astrophysics. Expertise with handling large datasets is a distinct advantage.

Research Assistant/Associate in Generative Design (Fixed Term)

A position exists for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering funded by the EPSRC through project: “RESTOR: Reuse of structural steel in construction”. The post holder will be located in the Civil Engineering Building, 7a JJ Thomson Ave, Cambridge, UK. The key responsibilities and duties are to: develop a web-based, generative Digital Twin (DT) design tool that will create automated and optimized steel frame configurations (TRL5). Other activities include implementing and maintaining software prototypes, integrating lab test results into the RESTOR tool, developing a user interface, testing, and dissemination of outcomes.

Candidate should disseminate the outcomes of the projects and author reports to the projects’ sponsors; develop proposals for own or joint research; conduct individual and collaborative research; present and publish research work; and manage own research and administrative activities, with guidance if required.

The post holder will also be expected to: liaise with the consortium partners and staff; liaise with colleagues and students; build internal and external contacts; administer meetings of the consortium; plan the use of and maintain research and lab resources and equipment; plan and manage own research activity; and contribute to planning of joint research projects led by the principal investigator.

Research Assistant/Associate in Hyper-Realistic Rendering (Fixed Term)

A position is available to work on rendering for hyper-realistic displays with a starting date between January and April 2023. The project aims to create images that would appear highly realistic to the human eye and convey an almost complete set of depth cues. This will be achieved by combining high dynamic range, binocular stereo and multiple focal depths in a single display setup. The successful candidate will work with traditional computer graphics, neural and image-based rendering methods to generate highly realistic content for our hyper-realistic display. The goal is to create a pipeline that lets us capture a 3D scene with high colour and geometric accuracy, represent it efficiently and then render it in real time on our display. We are particularly interested in the reproduction of skin tones and specular materials. Candidates should have a degree in computer science or a closely related discipline, with experience and interest in computer graphics. The candidates must have experience in real-time rendering using OpenGL. The position requires excellent programming skills.
