RESEARCH POSITION: POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN SYSTEMS NEUROSCIENCE: IN VIVO AND IN VITRO TWO-PHOTON CALCIUM IMAGING

The Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience (CSN) group at the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences is looking for a highly qualified and ambitious postdoctoral researcher to conduct research activities within the context of a recently awarded European project. Current research of the group focuses on neural mechanisms of perception, multisensory integration, interactions between sensory and memory systems and conscious representation. These topics are addressed using a variety of methods, such as ensemble recordings and two-photon calcium imaging, optogenetics, computational modelling and advanced analysis of neural data. The main objective of the project is to compare neuronal dynamics during sleep-like conditions in cerebral organoids to natural sleep in an in vivo model. You have a PhD degree, preferably in systems neuroscience or related field and experience in computer programming, neural data analytics and/or computational neuroscience.

RESEARCH POSITION: POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER ON TRUST IN THE DIGITAL SOCIETY

The Informatics Institute at the Faculty of Science and the University Research Priority Area on Trust in the Digital Society is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to study trust towards technology, i.e. the conditions and limits, safeguards, legal, technological, economic conditions of trusted and trustworthy technology. The digital society relies on an ever-expanding network of digital infrastructures. While researchers have been working on various (computational) trust models, the relationships with interpersonal, social and economic trust perspectives is still underexplored. Despite their widespread use, we know little about the trustworthiness of our digital infrastructures. At best it is difficult to establish their trustworthiness (such as with AI), at worst they are proven to be untrustworthy (as is the case with social media). Some of these digital infrastructures play key roles in interpersonal and societal trust dynamics. The Postdoctoral researcher will be hired by the Faculty of Science, Informatics Institute of the UvA, and will be sharing their time between the Faculty of Science, and the Faculty of Law, closely collaborating with two other postdoctoral researchers in the Trust RPA. You will be using research methods from engineering as well as empirical research to study the trustworthiness safeguards and guarantees of various digital technology infrastructures, especially how engineering understandings and safeguards of trustworthiness can/need to be complemented by legal, economic, institutional approaches. You should have a PhD degree in Informatics, Artificial Intelligence and has affinity with social sciences (sociology, economics, political science, communication science or related fields).

RESEARCH POSITION: POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN ORGANIZATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY

The goal of the project is investigating inclusion in academic institutions, focusing on the role of perspective integration. Perspective integration is a necessary component of an inclusive culture in academia; there is scholarly consensus on the critical role of effectively attending to and integrating different perspectives among institutional members for creating inclusive institutions. However, how such integration can emerge in a meaningful way and sustain over time is not well understood. Moreover, the current state of knowledge is deficient as it overlooks the multifaceted nature of perspective integration as well as how the different facets may have divergent inclusion-related effects depending on the power position and ethnic group membership of the involved individuals. You should have a PhD degree in organizational psychology or a related discipline and experience with quantitative research and qualitative research is an added bonus.

RESEARCH POSITION: POSTDOC IN LOGIC AND COGNITION

The Nihil project studies cases of divergence between every day and logical-mathematical reasoning under the hypothesis that they are a straightforward consequence of a tendency in human cognition to neglect empty representations (neglect-zero tendency). In the project we (i) develop logics which formally represent the neglect-zero tendency and rigorously study its impact on interpretation [logic]; (ii) explore possible conventionalizations of neglect-zero effects in specific linguistic domains [language]; and (iii) experimentally investigate the impact of neglect-zero in ordinary reasoning and its conjectured suspension, for example, in the context of a mathematical proof [cognition]. The postdoc researcher will contribute to task (iii) [cognition] combining insights and techniques from (experimental) linguistics, psychology of reasoning, logic and philosophy. You should have a PhD in Linguistics, Psychology, Philosophy, Logic or a related field.

RESEARCH POSITION: TWO POSTDOCS ON DIGITAL TWIN-ORIENTED VIRTUAL RESEARCH ENVIRONMENTS AND INFRASTRUCTURE SERVICES

We are looking for two researchers on the subject of ‘digital twins-oriented virtual research environment and infrastructure services’. The positions will be funded by the NWO project LTER-LIFE. LTER-LIFE is a large-scale research infrastructure in the making; it aims to provide a state-of-the-art e-infrastructure to study and predict how changes in climate and other human-induced pressures affect ecosystems and biodiversity. To truly predict how ecosystems and landscapes will respond to current and future global change, we need to increase the availability of existing environmental long-term datasets, integrate disparate types of ecological data, and create a user-friendly and secure cloud-based digital modelling and simulation platform that can be used to link data to models and scenarios. This can be done by creating Digital Twins of entire ecosystems. A Digital Twin is “a digital replica of a living or non-living physical entity”. Building Digital Twins of ecosystems has only recently become possible as Big Data, artificial intelligence (AI) applications and analytics, advanced computing infrastructure, and the FAIR principles have been developed and made available for ecology, ecosystem restoration, and biodiversity science. The candidate should have a master or PhD (preferred) degree in computer science or relevant disciplines and expertise in cloud computing, distributed and parallel computing, distributed workflow management and be familiar with AI (machine learning), big data, and data management techniques.
